CLOSE PROTECTION TRAINING -
Course Outline in respect of close protection training
course as recognised by the Edexcel and SIA. The close protection-training
course has been devised based on a combination of both Police and Military
close protection training courses, together with experience gained within
the private sector in relation to close protection. The designees of
the course have many years of experience in relation to close protection
and hold official home office qualifications in relation to the subject
matter.
The course is run over a 15 day training period, (student will require
the first aid at work training certificate, this can be offered as part
of the course) which involves both classroom theory input, together
with practical training scenarios. The student initially is led through
the theory of the specific lesson within the classroom environment;
this is then reinforced by way of practical training scenarios where
the student puts the theory into practice. Experienced and qualified
trainers in the field conduct the courses.
The students are assessed by way of question and answer during the classroom
sessions, together with assessment during practical training scenarios.
The final assessment of the student, is both theory based with a written
examination and on a practical front, by way of a final exercise in
which the students set up and run a close protection operation.
The course confirms to the content as required by the SIA regulations,
in respect to National Occupational Standards in relation to close protection
training. The below is a guide to the training manual and course content
in reference to the specific headings as directed by the SIA.
The GuardWatch training program in relation to close protection covers
all required fields as outlined below. GuardWatch offers the below training,
either as part of, or in addition to the Close Protection Course as
described.
A full written Training Performance Record will be issued to the student
on the conclusion of each module. Students reaching the required standards
at the culmination of each module will also be issued with a GuardWatch
certification specifying both the skills and abilities achieved by the
student within that module.
On successful completion of this course students can be assured that
they have the confidence and credibility to enter the field of Personal
Security. In addition you will be certified that in the opinion of GuardWatch
instructional staff, that you now have the ability to work operationally
within the security industry with motivation and at the highest of professional
standards as a Close Protection Operative.
Finally you will achieve the satisfaction that you have undertaken the
most demanding and professionally run courses available in the private
sector for this type of work and will be able to show to potential employers
(and colleagues) by way of your Training Performance Records, the high
standards you have already attained.
This course is run both in the UK and the United States allowing the
student to gain experience internationally. This is an intense course
culminating in a final exercise where all skills learned will be put
to the test.
GuardWatch staff will endeavour, where possible, to assist with students
travel arrangements for those who have to attend by way of public transport.
(Details supplied on request).
Training undertaken within the US includes all flights and car hire
and accommodation but not meals.
Students would be expected to bring with them suitable clothing appropriate
for the training undertaken within the chosen module. Advice on such
matters will be included within the pre-read package. The supply and
usage of vehicles required for the operational needs of the course will
be included within the course fee.
As stated, students undertaking the Modular Training will receive comprehensive
pre-read notes, together with a suitable binder once their full course
fee has been processed. The notes will form the basis of the theory
within the module undertaken. It is intended that these notes be studied
in some depth prior to the commencement of the training. This will enable
more time for practical applications of those tactics and techniques
explained within them. This manual should accompany students attending
each module. Failure to do so may render the student ineligible to undertake
training. These Modules can be physically and mentally demanding so
a general high standard of personal fitness is required to benefit from
the training undertaken.
BIIAB Accredited Maybo Physical Intervention Programme -
Duration - 2 modules of 4 hours
Summary -
● Recognises the need for staff performing higher risk roles such as
door supervision to be taught safer methods of physical intervention
to improve staff and customer safety ● Developed with Maybo, the leading
conflict management specialists.
Details -
BIIAB has long recognised the need for staff performing higher risk
roles such as door supervision to be taught safer methods of physical
intervention, which would help reduce use of high-risk techniques, and
improve staff and customer safety.
Many of those involved with door supervision have had no formal training
in physical intervention, resulting in an inconsistent approach that
leaves everyone vulnerable. Not only do holders of the SIA licence themselves
face the danger of becoming the victim of assault but they also risk
potential prosecution and loss of their licence if they are found guilty
of assaulting customers. Recent high-profile cases have also shown how
both the providers of door supervisors and owner/operators can be held
liable for the acts of door supervisors.
BIIAB has pioneered development in this area with Maybo, the leading
conflict management specialists, working on a number of successful initiatives
addressing conflict and work-related violence. These include the BIIAB
Award in Conflict Management, and the original BIIAB Door Supervisors
National Certificate scheme, which has been superseded by the current
BIIAB Level 2 National Certificate for Door Supervisors.
BIIAB developed the Level 2 National Certificate for Door Supervisors
in response to Security Industry Authority licensing requirements which
do not include physical intervention. BIIAB however recognises that
training in the area of physical intervention is key, and has accredited
the Physical Intervention programme.
Who is the Physical Intervention programme for?
The most significant area of need and opportunity lies with those personnel
performing licensable security functions. However, the programme could
also cover wider needs within licensed retail environments, for example,
providing an option of lower level disengagement skills for those in
non-security roles such as licensees and other frontline staff.
What does the qualification cover?
The Physical Intervention programme provides candidates with a wider
range of non-violent options for dealing with the most common scenarios
involving physical contact in licensed premises. It does not offer a
technique to cover every possible situation, but provides a solid foundation
in terms of knowledge and skills to further reduce risk to customers
and staff.
The programme comprises two modules:
• Disengagement (defensive) Skills.
• Escort and Holding Skills.
Provided that candidates have had prior training in conflict management,
the two modules can be taken by candidates separately or together, dependant
on the role and risks faced.
Both the Disengagement Skills module and the Escort and Holding Skills
module are each designed to be delivered in four hours (although longer
tuition options may be available). A comprehensive workbook, presented
in an easy-to-follow format, including colour diagrams of the core techniques
taught, is available for each module.
Skills development records are kept for each delegate on the programme.
The BIIAB nominated tutor will observe each delegate as they practice
the skills and techniques being taught and will sign-off when the tutor
is satisfied they have seen the delegate accurately demonstrate the
skill.
Each delegate is issued with a training record summarising completion
of each module which is signed-off by the tutor. BIIAB will certificate
those candidates who successfully achieve both the Disengagement Skills,
and the Escort and Holding Skills modules.
Candidates who have qualified for the Security Industry Authority door
supervision licence with other centres can access this scheme through
a BIIAB approved centre. Candidates can also access the scheme if they
do not hold the licence but hold Unit 2 of the BIIAB Level 2 National
Certificate for Door Supervisors (or equivalent), or the BIIAB Award
in Conflict Management.
